I don’t know about you but I always feel pretty terrible after a night out. I don’t even really drink that much, two cocktails & a sambuca shot and I’m ready for bed, but the next day will be a write off! I’ve devised a little routine for days when I’m not feeling my best and thought I’d share it with the world.
Firstly, ALWAYS take your makeup off before bed. I don’t care how drunk you are! Leave face wipes (usually I hate them but they’re better than nothing!) or remover & some cotton pads next to your bed so you don’t forget. There’s nothing worse than waking up with crusty mascara sticking your eyes together, pores all clogged up with foundation and a layer of grime. Yuck. I love Bioderma Micellar Water followed by La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo to ensure I wake up to a clean face, even if my head doesn’t feel so fresh!
Then before you conk out, pop a paracetamol and drink a huuuge glass of water. It only takes a moment and you’ll be thankful for it when you wake up.
Usually after a few drinks I wake up in the morning feeling “bleugh”. I can’t quite put my finger on what’s wrong, I just don’t feel right. Once you’ve made it out of bed pour yourself a biiig glass of water, a cup of tea and force down some buttery toast.
Now that your insides are sorted, we can begin work on the outside. Chances are, you bloody stink. Alcohol, smoke, stale perfume- yikes! Lean over the bath and shampoo your hair. Twice. Apply a hair mask or conditioner then run yourself a lovely deep bubble bath- use something that smells delicious- Arran Aromatics After The Rain has to be one of my favourite scents in the whole world. It will forever remind me of my Grandma and make me smile, so I’ll throw in some bath salts for the ultimate bath pamper! For hair, I love the TRESemme Deep Clean Shampoo- its clarifying so cleans better than most, getting all the dirt and product buildup off but it’s gentle enough for every wash. I’m a big fan of hair masks so I usually have two or three lying around. I’d generally use either the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask or the Macadamia Deep Repair Masque.
Give your face another quick wash, apply a face mask- I alternate Dermalogica Skin Refining Mask and the Alpha H Liquid Gold Mask- then lie back whilst they get to work on your skin & hair. Maybe pop on the radio (not too loud!) or read your favourite book and soak. Once ready rinse your face & your hair, pat yourself dry and moisturise your entire body. I love The Body Shops body butters for the body or Arran Aromatics After the Rain.
Thirsty? Down another glass of water right now! The rest of you is probably pretty dehydrated too so make sure to moisturise your face well. My skin is oily so I usually go for something mattifying but on a morning like this I slather on Lierac Radiance Mask Vitamin-Enriched Lifting Fluid. Run a little hair oil (Moroccanoil Original Hair Treatment Oil* Review) through your locks and let them dry naturally- don’t waste your energy and hurt your head with blow drying and straightening! As I have curly hair I tend to use the Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream* to tame the frizz.
Even if I feel crappy I still like to look nice so I’ll pop on some light, fresh looking makeup. If you’re not going out though feel free to go bare faced. I use a nice hydrating foundation like Bourjois Healthy Mix which does a great job of brightening up my skin, and I hide any dark circles with the Healthy Mix Concealer. The aim is to look fresh & awake so I skip contouring and pop on a lovely rosy flush with Illamasqua Nymph blusher. I keep eyes pretty & simple with Maybelline Colour Tattoo in On & On Bronze and lashings of mascara.
And to complete the ‘feel better’ pampering I give myself a little foot spa. First I give my feet a scrub with the Avon Foot Works Mask- massage the scrub into the feet and ankles for a few minutes then leave on like a face mask until it’s completely dry. This stuff is amazing, it’s really cooling so your poor feet, which probably ache from dancing in heels all night, will love you for this! I give it about 10 minutes then soak in a bucket of lukewarm water, pat dry and massage in this Fly High foot gel- seriously refreshing- and a little foot rub makes everything seem better. Once the foot gel is all soaked in I give them a spray with yet another refreshing wonder, The Body Shop Peppermint Cooling Foot Spray. This stuff feels like a gorgeous smelling ice spray and is the perfect end to our little pamper session.
The rest of the day, relax but don’t fester. Make yourself a light lunch, something easy like a salad or sandwich. Pop out & get a coffee for some fresh air and to stretch your legs. Then curl up on the sofa in your comfiest PJs and have a marathon tv sesh- Big Bang Theory, Hart of Dixie- something light to pick up your mood.
Make sure you have an early night & you’ll wake up the next day good as new
